INTRODUCTION

The Hawai‘i Farmers Market Management Toolkit provides timely information, tips, and templates to help market managers navigate the increasing demands they face. We hope to cut your learning curve, share best practices, and adapt the excellent existing resources to the Hawai‘i context.

Each chapter includes downloadable tools in Word or Excel that you can tailor to your market needs. The Toolkit is designed to be added to and updated in real time. Please send us your recommendations and suggested improvements.

The Toolkit is dedicated to Hawai‘i farmers market staff, boards, volunteers, sponsors, and farmers and other vendors who are working hard to support local farms, grow good food for families, and restore the abundance of our ‘āina.

See you at the farmers market!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Hawaii Farmers Market Management Toolkit began through a partnership between the Hawai’i Good Food Alliance and the Hawai’i Farmers Market Association. This work was funded by a USDA Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) grant awarded to Sustainable Molokai, a member of, and in partnership with, the Hawaii Good Food Alliance, in December 2019. Any opinions, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this publication are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the view of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. We are grateful for critical contributions to the 2021 Hawai’i State Farmers Market Management Toolkit by Stormy Soza, Cameron Foy, & Razel Dalofin and all of the project participants: Donna Mitts, Saleh Azizi, Lauren Loor, Megan Fox, and Harmonee Williams.

HFMA

The Hawaii Farmers Market Association (HFMA) was established in 2020 to strengthen and promote a vibrant and sustainable local food system and economy by supporting farmers markets and direct-to-consumer farm marketing statewide. We do this through:

  • Marketing Hawaii farmers markets and producers with an online directory and promotional campaigns
  • Providing technical assistance, educational resources, and networking opportunities
  • Working to increase market sales and access through expansion of farmers market nutrition programs
  • Creating a collective platform for data collection and reporting, advocacy, and community voice
